Girl talk is an artist that mixes songs from different generations and genres and transforms them by layering them with other tracks. Girl Talk’s music is a form of musical collage, because he takes certain samples, whether it be lyrics or instrumentals, and appropriates them into a hybrid, which in the end, becomes a new song entirely. By doing so, Girl Talk takes away the aura of the original samples he uses and creates a new unique aura, by remediating the original tracks. In every composition, Girl Talk manages to incorporate many layers of music by always including at least two samples at the same time; songs that usually exist within different realms sound musically cohesive. Girl Talk was one of the first DJs to experiment with this type of layering, and has become quite well-known for it. Do you think Girl Talk has created a new genre entirely through his interpretations, or is he the ultimate plagiarist?

First of all, this is very interesting type of music that I was unaware of. It is very interesting to listen to but, I believe this is not plagiarism. This type of music might become a new type of genre. I believe this is just another form of DJ where it has been enhanced and tweaked the songs in order for people to listen to it. However, in this case, the artist doesn’t seem to rework the actual recordings of the song. There are many artists that use music samples from other artists. This music reminds me of any other mix tapes, or remix that we listen to today and as I believe it not a source of plagiarism.
I couldn’t agree more with you, Dilbir. Many other artists use samples of other tracks for their songs- what makes this so different? It’s fascinating to see how he comes up with new formulas for songs. As he mixes different tracks together, music from the 80s might have a rap overlay and sound really good, despite the two tracks sounding so oppositional at first. Although despite our beliefs of him not being a plagiarist- how do you think all the artists feel when he takes samples of their hits (the ones he does not purchase the rights to)?
Well, I believe, that there are many different feeling many artist may have. It may be hatred towards the new song (where we contain many copyright cases towards that specific artist) or they may even like the new song, causing them to believe its better than their own. But there are many issues and different points of view that artists have when their specific song is used by Girl Talk creating a great controversy to occur within the music industry. Hopefully, the music industry will be able to recognize this type of music and accept it for what it is.
